19th Annual Celebrate Canada Day in Mill Woods

Welcome to the 19th Annual Celebrate Canada Day in Mill Woods event. This truly is a Community Event, supported by the 10 Community Leagues within Mill Woods and The Meadows, as well as the Mill Woods Presidents' Council. This event is the culmination of 10 months of hard work by the Canada Day Committee.

Some people think that this event is put on by the City of Edmonton. That isn't the case. The City is very heavily involved in the River Valley Celebration, also known as "Edmonton Main" by people in the business. Our little event, known as "Edmonton Mill Woods", had humble beginnings 19 years ago. It began small with a plywood stage laying on a few 2" x 4" studs, a home stereo, some ethnic dance and a small fireworks show. Some people have even stated that the early years didn't even have a stage, just lots of smiling faces. Boy, have things sure changed over the years.

We still have the smiling faces; we Just have more of them. Every year, our event draws over 50,000 spectators. People not only travel from all over Edmonton to Mill Woods on July 1st, we also draw from the surrounding communities. The Children's Activities have also grown over the years. This year, there is a bigger and better Petting Zoo. It even has a camel!

The stage has matured too. Gone is the plywood and stud stage. Now we use a 32' x 24' raised stage with roof. We have retired the home stereo and replaced it with 50,000 Watts of Professional Sound. We still have the ethnic dance but have added much more music than earlier years. This began much like a neighborhood party has now evolved into a massive Birthday Celebration!

Now sit back and enjoy the show. See why we believe this should be referred to as "Edmonton Main". If you have any comments or suggestions, please email them to mwcanadaday@shaw.ca. I would love to hear from you.
